Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mold detection dog?

A mold detection dog is professionally trained to locate the scent of mold hidden within homes, buildings, vehicles, and other indoor environments. Using their highly sensitive noses, mold dogs can identify areas of concern that may not be visible during a standard visual inspection.

How accurate are mold detection dogs?

Mold detection dogs are trained to detect mold at extremely low concentrations — as little as one part per trillion. Their ability to quickly pinpoint hidden sources of mold makes them a highly effective, non-invasive detection tool.

What types of mold can Birdie detect?

Birdie is trained to detect the presence of mold and microbial growth commonly found in water-damaged environments. The inspection helps identify areas that may require further testing or remediation.

Where can hidden mold be found?

Mold can hide behind walls, under flooring, inside cabinets, crawl spaces, attics, HVAC systems, vehicles, boats, and other areas not easily visible to the eye.

Is a mold dog inspection invasive?

No. One of the biggest benefits of using a mold detection dog is that inspections are completely non-invasive. There is no need to open walls or remove flooring during the initial inspection process unless further investigation is recommended.

How long does an inspection take?

Inspection times vary depending on the size of the property, but most residential inspections can be completed within 1–2 hours.

Do you provide same-day results?

Yes. In most cases, results and findings are discussed immediately following the inspection so you can better understand any areas of concern.

Can Birdie inspect commercial properties?

Absolutely. We inspect homes, apartments, offices, medical facilities, schools, storage units, vehicles, RVs, boats, and commercial buildings.

Should I still test my home if I don’t see visible mold?

Yes. Mold is often hidden behind walls, under flooring, or inside ventilation systems. Many clients experience symptoms or suspect moisture issues long before visible mold appears.

Do mold dogs replace traditional mold testing?

Mold detection dogs are an excellent tool for locating hidden sources of mold and narrowing down areas of concern. Depending on the situation, additional air or surface testing may still be recommended.

Do you travel outside of San Diego?

Yes. While we are primarily based in San Diego and surrounding communities, we are available for travel nationwide depending on client needs.
